What it shows
Prior-period extremes are some of the most widely watched price levels. High and Lows + ATR draws them for you:
- the previous year’s high and low,
- the previous month’s high and low,
- the previous day’s high and low,
- an ATR range from today’s open, showing how far price would travel today if it moved by its average true range.
How traders use it
- Note where today’s price sits between yesterday’s high and low and the larger monthly and yearly range.
- Compare the distance already covered today with the ATR range. A day that has already used most of its average range calls for more caution before chasing further movement.
- Combine the levels with your own entry rules and risk limits. The indicator does not include either.
Limitations
- Levels are calculated from the chart’s session data. Session definitions and time zones affect where a “day” starts, especially on instruments that trade around the clock.
- ATR describes average movement, not a ceiling. Price can exceed the range on news or in trending markets.
