How Daily Loss Limits Work in Prop Trading

A daily drawdown limit is only meaningful when you know the reference amount, the loss measurement and the provider's reset time.

What is the reference?

Some rules base the daily allowance on the account's original capital; others use the previous day's balance or another recorded value. A $500 limit can therefore produce different thresholds depending on the chosen reference.

Balance versus equity

Balance generally reflects realized transactions, while equity includes unrealized profit and loss from open positions. If a firm's rule checks equity, a floating loss may breach a limit even before a position closes.

Daily reset time matters

The firm's reset clock might differ from the user's local time and the broker server time. Daylight saving changes can complicate the mapping. Always verify the exact reset rules with the provider.

Profits and cash movements

How intraday profits, deposits, fees and withdrawals affect daily thresholds is provider-specific. Do not assume all firms share the same treatment or that a deposit is trading profit.

How a monitor helps

PropGuard Free is designed to visualize calculated limits and send notifications. It does not block trading or guarantee avoidance of violations. Accurate configuration remains essential.
